Online Masters in Accounting

Online Masters in Accounting

Shorter University’s online Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program is designed to provide professional preparation for the accounting industry. Many states/jurisdictions now require or will require 150 semester hours of education for obtaining the CPA certification. Shorter University’s MAcc is a 31 semester hour program designed for individuals with an undergraduate degree in accounting or a related discipline. The program can be completed in one year and the program is 100% online.

Program Benefits

Certified public accountants today not only need to have a high level of technical competence, but must also have good analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills. According to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, in most cases the additional academic work needed to acquire the technical competence and to develop the skills required by today’s CPA is best obtained at the graduate level because graduate-level programs are an excellent way to more fully develop skills such as communication, presentation, and interpersonal relations, while integrating them with the technical knowledge being acquired.

The Institute continues, saying that studies also show that students with a graduate education have substantially higher success rates on the Uniform CPA Examination. Further, master’s degree holders receive starting salaries that are approximately 10 to 20 percent higher than the starting salaries of those with only bachelor’s degrees. Finally, evidence shows that promotions to manager and partner and to corporate managerial positions increasingly are given to individuals with master’s degrees.

Career Opportunities

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for CPA’s is expected to see much faster than average employment growth over the next decade. The employment of accountants is expected to grow by 22 percent between 2008 and 2018.

Admissions

To enroll in the Master of Accountancy program, students must have:

1. An undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.50 (on a 4.00 grading system). Applicants will be considered eligible for admission if their undergraduate GPA in the final 60 hours of their enrollment is a 2.50 or greater on a 4.00 scale.
2. GMAT score of 450 points. The GMAT may be waived if the applicant has five years of professional experience, is a graduate of Shorter University, or has completed a graduate degree from an accredited institution or the applicant is currently enrolled in the “Early Access” program and has completed at least one graduate level course prior to completing your undergraduate degree.
3. Evidence of completion of a U.S. baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution or its equivalent. The applicant is responsible for providing official transcripts from each institution attended. Students will be required to complete any necessary prerequisite courses in the areas of Accounting and Statistics before entry into the program.
