12 Scholarships You Didn’t Know About

It’s common knowledge that scholarships are awarded for athletic ability, academic achievement and financial need. But that’s not the only way to earn money for college. Scholarships in the state of Georgia and across the nation are granted to students who study in a certain field, partake in a particular hobby or win contests. There are even scholarships just for trekkies and the very tall. We’ve compiled a dozen scholarships that are open to U.S. students or residents of Georgia and may pertain to students interested in pursuing an online degree from Shorter University. Jimmy Beans Wool Scholarship

Don’t let the name mislead you; this yearly scholarship isn’t for the dimwitted. Jimmy Beans Wool awards scholarships to American students who can knit, crochet or sew. The scholarship is open to high school seniors, undergraduate, graduate and professional students in any field. American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Scholarships

Breaker, breaker, good buddies! The ARRL offers over 60 scholarships to students who have a knack for amateur radio. Most scholarships are regional, but there are opportunities for students all over the nation. You can read a brief description of each scholarship and see if you are eligible at the ARRL website. Georgia Scholarships The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta The Community Foundation offers a dozen scholarships to Georgia residents. Opportunities are available for graduating seniors and adult learners. Eligibility requirements and award amounts vary by scholarship. Scholarships by Program Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation Scholarships PAGE Foundation Logo   Attention, future teachers! The PAGE Foundation offers a dozen $1,000 one-year scholarships to Georgia students who are pursuing a degree in education. For full details, visit the PAGE Foundation website.   Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants (GSCPA) Education Foundation Scholarships Educational Foundation of the GSCPAs The GSCPA sponsors annual scholarships for Georgia students enrolled in an accountancy degree program. Scholarships are available for women and minority students in accounting.

Contest Scholarships Stuck at Prom Stuck at Prom Why buy a dress and rent a tux when you can make your own… out of duct tape? Graduating seniors who construct and wear couple’s outfits made from Duck Brand Duct Tape can enter to win a $5,000 scholarship. The Gallery Collection offers an annual $10,000 scholarship to artistically inclined students who submit artwork for the front of a greeting card. American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) Scholarship Fire sprinklers save lives, but they can also help you earn money for college. The AFSA offers 10 $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors and five $1,000 scholarships to adult learners who read and answer questions about the “Fire Sprinkler Essay.” Each correct answer awards entrants one entry into the drawing. The contest may sound easy, but the competition is heated! Learn more at the AFSA Scholarship website. Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation (CKSF) Common sense isn’t that common. If you consider yourself a trivia master, show off what you know and earn money for school through the CKSF. High school, college and graduate students are eligible, and parents can compete on behalf of their children, too. Award amounts range from $250 to $2,500. Paying for college doesn’t have to be a difficult enterprise. The Starfleet Academy Scholarship offers up to $1,000 to Star Trek fans, allowing students to “cling on” to their money. Five categories are offered, depending on field of study. There’s no life-long guarantee, but you might prosper from applying for this scholarship at the Starfleet International website.

Tall Clubs International Scholarship If you’re under 21 but over 5’10” (women) or 6’2” (men), you may be eligible for a scholarship from Tall Clubs International. Get the long, but not so short, of it at tall.org. Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) Scholarship Lettuce help you pay for college! Two $5,000 scholarships are awarded annually to high school students who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools or communities. Find out more and apply at vrg.org. There’s no raisin not to.
