BS Human Services Practicum

Practicum Description

Welcome to Shorter University Human Services practicum experience. The Human Services Field Practicum experience at Shorter University is conducted through a sixteen week supervised work experiences related to a Human Service area for which the student earns academic credit. The practicum experience is unpaid and can be completed on or off campus. An internship combines supervised work experiences with academic activities. It allows a student to augment classroom learning by working in a social, business, political, cultural or community organization.
What distinguishes a practicum experience from a short-term job or volunteer work? Intentional learning takes place in the form of a practicum contract through the student’s enrollment in an academic practicum course at Shorter. The Field practicum component of the human services program at Shorter University strives to assist in the preparation of the students to function as generalist practitioners within the field of human services. Hull & Kirst-Ashman (2006), describes the generalist human service professional as one who possess an eclectic knowledge base, professional values, and a wide range of skills to target systems of any size for change within the context of four primary processes. They go on to identify those primary processes as client empowerment, working effectively within an organizational structure under supervision, utilizing a range of professional roles, and the ability to apply critical thinking skills to the planned change process (Hull & Kirst-Ashman, 2006). With this understanding in mind, the Human Service Practicum provides an opportunity for students to systematically put into practice the knowledge and skills appropriate to generalist human service practice. It also gives all human service students’ actual practice experience within the human service field related to their career goals. This experience is viewed as the focal point for the integration and synthesis of prior didactic and laboratory experiences.
